At the launch of the first national conference for seniors in Ascending Life, Canada (this is their title), the guest speaker was Mr Jean-Louis Allard, former president of La Vie Montante. Jean-Louis reminded those present and us, indirectly, that we could be witnesses of God’s work through our charisms – the gifts we have received through God. He spoke of the wisdom of older people, the readiness of older people to give of themselves and the love and affection of of older people.
“How important it is, this love of the older person, which can be a living sign of the love of God. Our well organised and functional world can seem cold and anonymous; but there is a huge need of love, of personal attention, of smiles….and older people have time to give and above all to give of themselves to others with tenderness: to their children and grandchildren, to their nieces and nephews, and others by their welcoming and understanding presence.
We can become more and more, living examples of the love so well described by St Paul “Love is always patient and kind; love gives service; love is never boastful or conceited; it does not seek its own ends; it does not take offence; it delights in the truth; it is always ready to excuse, to trust to hope….”(1Cor. 13:4-7)
